Apocalypse Now by Tony Phillips

During the on-going Vietnam War, Captain Willard is sent on a dangerous mission into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade Green Beret who has set himself up as a God among a local tribe. This film is a twisted story of a man trying to find and high priority target in the vast jungle of Vietnam during the Vietnam conflict.

The film does a fantastic job in explaining the hypocrisy that infested the Vietnam conflict. The picture that Apocalypse Now paints is a down-to-earth portrayal on war. The cinematography is gorgeous, you feel sad when you see such beautiful scenery being blown up but that is what makes this a great film. The connection you draw with the characters is incredibly deep, if they’re in a bad situation, you feel like you are with them. Coppola always does a great job with characterization; in ways this film reminded me of some of his other work like The Godfather. I learned a lot about the Vietnam Conflict by watching this film, such as how the US wasn’t always the good guys. This film teaches a lot about war but also about the human psyche in a foreign environment. Overall I would highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a rich story and who can sit still for three hours.

During the Vietnam War Captain Willard is sent to kill Colonel Kutz even though he is a drunken mess himself broken from his first tour in Vietnam. The Military thinks Kutz is insane and sending his guys on illegal guerrilla missions. Even though Kurtz was insane it's not clear why killing him was a priority to the US Government when so many of our troops and the civilian Vietnamese were dying. When Clean is killed Chief breaks down. Lance and Chef turn to drugs to cope. The lighting on Kutz face is always dark. His face is almost always in shadows helping with the illusion of the darkness in his character, his state of mind. The way they light the scenes I thought was great. This movie made you realize how much war effected people’s minds. I agree the connections with the characters are really deep. Overall I recommend this movie.

  2. The Lighting depicted from each scene set the mood for a war movie. The audio from straight killing to emotion estates of the characters faces that were portrayed throughout the movie. In the movie with scenes of Kutz he is usually in a shadow or has a dark lighting in it, it shows how he is dark/Villain character in the film

  3. The movie is a great reflection on how troops acted in the war. It was very brutal and the music and lighting made it very dark. The music like the doors in it made it more emotional for some parts.
